More than 70 people today attended the opening day of a two-day educational training course on media and journalism organised by the Josoor Institute. This marks the latest in a successful series of events designed to equip sports practitioners and professionals within Qatar and the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region with the necessary skills and management capabilities to deliver major sporting tournaments successfully.

The introductory course titled, Media and Journalism: Best Practice for Major Events, features several workshop sessions to provide journalists and media professionals  from Qatar and the region with practical, tangible advice and guidance on successfully planning and organising print, broadcast, digital and social media activities at sporting events.

Qatar is hosting an unprecedented number of major events in the coming years. Between now and the 2022 FIFA World Cup™, the country will play host to tournaments in sports as varied as swimming, handball, athletics, amateur boxing, road cycling, and gymnastics. The Josoor Institute is playing an important role in ensuring their success through educating, empowering and supporting talented sports and events practitioners and building outstanding and sustainable sports and events industries in Qatar and throughout the MENA region.

This latest course from the Josoor Institute will equip journalists, media professionals as well as providers of services to the media with a clear understanding of the media environment around a major event and how best to organise, manage and operate during such occasions. Speakers from some of the most highly respected international media organisations including Agence France-Presse (AFP), BBC Sport, beIN Sports and Getty Images have joined a cast of national and regional media and public relations experts to share their insight and expertise.

Abdulla Al-Mulla, Executive Director of Operations Research and Development at Qatar Foundation who is one of the speakers at the course said: “Qatar is preparing to host several key large-scale events over the next few years. These present a unique opportunity to energise our young people and create abundant new opportunities for social, human and economic development. But fulfilling our potential requires the right training and development, the transfer of knowledge and expertise from international professionals to our region, as well as the creation of new sports, tourism, hospitality and events enterprises. Through the work of the Josoor Institute we can revolutionise the sports and events industries of the Middle East and North Africa.”

Workshop sessions over the two days will cover a broad range of topics including first-hand perspectives and testimonials from media that have covered some of the world’s biggest sporting events in recent years.  These include practical case studies from media organisations on their handling of major events including the 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil 2014™ and the Sochi Winter Olympic Games.

Commenting on the course, Mushtaq Al-Waeli, Acting Executive Director for the Josoor Institute said: “This latest course and the quality and calibre of speakers clearly highlight our ambition to support the transfer of knowledge from the very best international talent and expertise. Through inviting them to share the wisdom of their insights, and experience, such interactions create the ideal conditions for the successful delivery not only of sporting events here in Qatar, but around the MENA region and gives us the very best opportunities to harness the energy and the passion of the whole region.”

Launched in December 2013, the Josoor Institute is training many of the people who will play an integral role in Qatar’s hosting of the 2022 FIFA World Cup™. The Josoor Institute focuses on providing these individuals with the knowledge and skills to deliver large-scale sporting events, as well as non-sporting events, across the region long after 2022. The Josoor Institute is proud to be affiliated with Georgetown University, a leading academic partner. Named as the Josoor Institute’s institutional and lead academic partner, Georgetown University will provide academic and administrative support that includes collaboration and innovation in curriculum development, quality management, oversight and endorsement for short courses and the development of the academic framework and co-development of content for long courses.

The Josoor Institute will be introducing a programme of lengthier, in-depth courses in 2015 that will offer professional certificates and diplomas. These more in-depth educational programmes are designed to provide a deeper understanding of the subjects covered and help develop the skills required to work in sports and events for those leaving higher education or those planning a career.
